The Washington PostCOLUMBUS, Ohio — Republican John McCain declared for the first time Thursday he believes the Iraq war can be won by 2013, although he rejected suggestions that his talk of a timetable put him on the same side as Democrats clamoring for full-scale troop withdrawals.
The Republican presidential contender, in a mystical speech that also envisioned Osama bin Laden dead or captured, and Americans with the choice of paying a simple flat tax or following their standard 1040 form, said only a small number of troops would remain in Iraq by the end of a prospective first term because al-Qaida will have been defeated and Iraq’s government will be functioning on its own.
“By January 2013, America has welcomed home most of the servicemen and women who have sacrificed terribly so that America might be secure in her freedom. The Iraq War has been won,” McCain told an audience of several hundred here in the capital city of a general election battleground state.
Later, as the Arizona senator drove to the airport on his “Straight Talk Express” campaign bus, McCain was peppered by reporters with questions about the timetable. He and his aides insisted there was a difference between ending the war and bringing troops home and, as they criticize the Democrats, announcing a withdrawal upfront without regard for the military endgame.
“It’s not a timetable; it’s victory. It’s victory, which I have always predicted. I didn’t know when we were going to win World War II; I just knew we were going to win,” McCain said.
The Vietnam veteran added: “I know from experience, you set a day for surrender _ which is basically what you do when you say you are withdrawing _ and you will pay a much a heavier price later on.”

This is wonderful news! We can win in only five more years! So with a $720 million daily cost of the Iraq War and occupation this means that it will ony cost $1,314,000,000,000 more dollars…
This is a small price to pay to bring democracy to Iraq. Then we can go to Iran. Actually we will probably start there this year right after election.
Why stop there? Shoot… let’s bring democracy to every singly country on the planet. That way we can save the planet and the environment both at the same time, right?

Uh 2013 would cover his 4 year term if he got in. He has no intention of ending the war. He’s already covering himself for IF he is elected. Bush the III is right (I’ve heard that term) Geez

The only way to win would be to remove ALL the people from that

and yet they started a “War On Poverty”
and the “Great Society” became all the “greater”

There are many reasons why this war cant be won
at the top of the list is the fact that
WE DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT WE ARE FIGHTING FOR
or much less care.
NOBODY voted for ‘bringing “Democracy” to Iraq’
Or “Nation building”
Or wholesale demolition of an entire nation followed by the astronomically expensive rebuilding of that nation, with certain peoples best buddies getting all of the contracts. (who says concrete isnt a glamourous business? guns, sunglass wearing govt operatives with suitcasefuls of cash? lavish ‘conferences’? armed escorts?
If we had ever been consulted, we would have told them that we have no constitutional mandate for fools errands.
This fools errand I am afraid will stand up throughout all of history as the absolute worst.

that way you wont get caught in the “read my lips” trap that Daddy Bush got caught in.
Lets say we elect this [fellow]. Suddenly the year is 2015 and we are sending off our final boyscouts and janitors to Iraq to bring the Iraqis democracy- if at that time it dawns on us that it is all wrong and we start looking for who is responsible, the chief [person] can just say “hey, all I said was that “I believe it can be won”.
