In a stealthy maneuver, the Bush administration has boosted the threat to the public by increasing the number of Mexico-based trucking firms allowed access to all U.S. roads as part of the reckless North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) trucking ?pilot program.? The Department of Transportation recently revealed an increase in the number of NAFTA trucks permitted to all U.S. highways ? now 10 carriers, sending as many as 55 trucks throughout the country.

The last time the Bush administration made a public announcement about the number of Mexico-based carriers allowed to participate in the NAFTA trucks pilot program, there were only three carriers.

Readers bombard Newsweek with evidence after adverse story on Ron Paul

A Newsweek story critical of Rep. Ron Paul and labeling the NAFTA Superhighway a baseless conspiracy theory has generated approximately 250 adverse reader responses on the “comments” section of Newsweek’s website, many citing hard evidence that the proposed transcontinental trade corridor is quite real.

“There is a broad coalition of Americans developing across the United States who are opposed to a North American Union and know that Ron Paul is right and we need to take action now before it is too late,” Jesse Benton, national press secretary for the Ron Paul Presidential Campaign 08 told WND.

Particularly interesting among Newsweek’s reader comments were citations of Canadian government websites that openly discuss and declare plans to create a NAFTA Superhighway.

Several readers pointed to a Canadian government video clip gaining wide circulation on the Internet. It involves a Nov. 20 “Speech from the Throne,” in which John Harvard, lieutenant-governor of the Province of Manitoba, Canada, opened the second session of the 39th assembly of the provincial legislature with comments proclaiming support for the development of a “Mid-Continent Trade Corridor.”

“Manitoba is also taking a major role in the development of a Mid-Continent Trade Corridor, connecting our northern Port of Churchill with trade markets throughout the central United States and Mexico,” Harvard told the legislature.

“To advance the concept,” Harvard continued, “an alliance has been built with business leaders and state and city governments spanning the entire length of the Corridor. When fully developed, the trade route will incorporate an ‘inland port’ in Winnipeg with pre-clearance for international shipping.”

A video posted on YouTube shows excerpts from Harvard’s speech juxtaposed with clips of President Bush and Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper at the press conference of the third summit of the Security and Prosperity Partnership in Montebello, Quebec, on Aug. 21, ridiculing the North American Union and the NAFTA Superhighway as baseless conspiracy theories.

In an exclusive interview with WND, Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul fired back at Newsweek for an article labeling the NAFTA Superhighway a baseless conspiracy theory.

“It’s the same old story,” Paul said. “If Newsweek can’t discredit the message, they have to discredit the messenger.”

The Newsweek article, by Gretel C. Kovach, keyed off an answer the Texas congressman gave during the Nov. 28 CNN presidential debate. A YouTube.com question asked him about a “conspiracy theory regarding the Council [on] Foreign Relations and some plan to merge the United States with Canada and Mexico.”

Paul told WND the problem Newsweek and CNN have is that “it’s not just me” talking about it.

“We have some 14 states passing resolutions to oppose the North American Union and NAFTA Superhighways, amendments passed in Congress have taken away funds for North American integration projects and Virgil Goode has some 50 sponsors for his bill in the House,” Paul explained. “There are millions of Americans who oppose this globalist agenda.”

WND has reported the House and Senate are in the final stages of sending to President Bush a Department of Transportation funding bill with amendments removing the funds needed to continue the Mexican truck demonstration project.

Rep. Goode’s office confirmed to WND that House Concurrent Resolution 40, sponsored by the Virginia Republican to oppose the North American Union and NAFTA Superhighways, now has more than 40 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives.

“Millions of Americans know about these issues and are concerned about them,” Paul told WND. “What I was trying to say in the CNN debate is that this is not so much secret debates behind closed doors but real philosophical differences between those who believe in globalism, including many at the top of the Democratic and Republican parties, and those of us who believe in national sovereignty and securing our borders.”

‘Ron Paul wants you to be scared’

The Newsweek article began with, “Ron Paul wants you to be scared.”

After quoting Paul’s CNN debate comments, the article asserted nothing Paul said was true, including the prospects of a NAFTA superhighway, a North American Union or a regional currency.

The article focused on arguing there was no plan in existence to extend the Trans-Texas Corridor north.

As documented in a video clip currently posted on YouTube.com, Paul answered the debate question by saying there was “a conspiracy of ideas” involved in the question.
“This is an ideological battle,” Paul told the CNN audience. “Some of us believe in globalism, others of us believe in national sovereignty.

“There is a move on toward a North American Union,” Paul insisted, “just like early on there was a move on toward a European Union.”

NAFTA is moving toward a NAFTA highway, he contended.

“These are real things. It’s not like somebody made these things up. It’s not a conspiracy,” he said. “They don’t talk about it, and they might not admit it, but there’s been money spent on it.”

Texas, for example, unanimously passed legislation to stop the Trans-Texas Corridor, he said.

“They are planning on millions of acres taken by eminent domain for an international highway from Mexico to Canada,” said Paul.

Oklahoma State Republican Sen. Randy Brogdon, a strong opponent of the NAFTA superhighway, agreed with Paul.

“Senate Joint Resolution 22 was submitted to the Oklahoma legislature in 1995 calling for the support and creation of a NAFTA superhighway, which was spelled out in exactly those words,” Brodgon told WND. “What more evidence does Newsweek need?”

Economic retaliation from Mexico is a real threat if U.S. lawmakers repeal a provision that allows Mexican truckers access to the U.S. interior, according to former U.S. Rep. Jim Kolbe.

“If Congress succeeds in blocking (the program) I believe Mexico could retaliate, as they are entitled to do,” the Arizona Republican told members of the Southern Arizona Logistics Education Organization in Tucson on Thursday.

Kolbe, who retired at the beginning of the year after 11 terms in Congress, is the new chairman of the Canamex Corridor Task Force and part of a three-member committee appointed to monitor the cross-border truck program, which has faced strong opposition from some trucking union members and politicians.

He warned that if our southern neighbors “lose patience,” U.S. companies could face higher tariffs on trade entering Mexico.

“It’s not an idle threat,” Kolbe said. “And it sends a bad message to Mexico and Latin America about how seriously we take our obligations.”

The trucking program, a provision of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement, began in September. Before that, Mexican trucks were restricted to driving within a commercial border zone.
Attempts by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters to block the entry of Mexican trucks into the U.S. failed. The Senate then approved a proposal prohibiting the Transportation Department from spending money on the program, but it continues while Congress debates a larger transportation bill that contains the provision.

WASHINGTON — The man from Arlington, Texas, could barely contain his smirk as he looked into a computer video camera to pose a question of Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul.

Paul’s followers talk about such conspiracy theories as “merging the United States with Canada and Mexico . . .,” the questioner said in a YouTube video shown during the Wednesday debate. “Do you really believe in all this?”

Paul did not miss a beat. The Texas congressman coolly raised the specter of a dire new national threat — an as-yet unbuilt superhighway.

A border-spanning “NAFTA highway” now on the drawing board, Paul said, would link the U.S., Mexico and Canada, worsening illegal immigration and threatening American independence. “Our national sovereignty is under threat,” Paul warned.

Federal and state highway and trade officials and transportation consultants reacted Thursday with befuddlement and amusement. The fearsome secret international highway project Paul described does not exist, they said.

“There is no such superhighway like the one he’s talking about,” said Ian Grossman, a spokesman with the Federal Highway Administration. “It doesn’t exist, in plans or anywhere else.”

“It’s complete fiction,” said Tiffany Melvin, executive director of NASCO, a consortium of transportation agencies and business interests caught in the cross hairs of anti-highway activists. “This is the work of fringe groups that have wrapped a couple of separate projects together into one big paranoid fantasy.”

A loose confederation of conservative Internet bloggers and some right-wing groups, among them the John Birch Society, has seized on a burst of activity in federal highway projects in recent years as evidence that the Bush administration is pushing toward a European Union-style government for North America.

The problem, public officials said Thursday, is that the new emphasis on highway construction reflects a growing concern about renewing the crumbling U.S. road system, not a secret extension of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

“These whispers have been around in some form or another ever since NAFTA was signed,” said Grossman, who pointed out that numerous U.S. highways already are connected to Mexican and Canadian thoroughfares.

Paul took up the issue in recent years, sounding alarms in the Congressional Record after activists rallied against a $1- billion Texas project that aimed to build a privately financed highway corridor from the border with Mexico to the Oklahoma state line.

“The ultimate goal is not simply a superhighway,” Paul wrote to his constituents in October 2006, “but an integrated North American Union — complete with a currency, a cross-national bureaucracy, and virtually borderless travel within the Union.”

During the Wednesday debate, Paul also linked the purported NAFTA highway to his concerns about the Trilateral Commission — an enduring bugaboo of conspiracy theorists — and the World Trade Organization’s “control [of ] our drug industry, our nutritional products.” Paul added: “I don’t like big government in Washington, so I don’t like this trend toward international government.”

Jesse Benton, Paul’s campaign spokesman, said Thursday that Paul believed that the threat of a NAFTA highway was real. “Dr. Paul is not alone in thinking this is a substantial compromise of federal sovereignty,” Benton said. “There’s a strong belief by a lot of people that [the highway] would run clear up through Canada.”

Benton noted that Rep. Virgil H. Goode Jr. (R-Va.) had introduced a resolution expressing opposition to a NAFTA superhighway. It is signed by 42 congressmen, including Paul and two of his Republican presidential rivals, Reps. Duncan Hunter of California and Tom Tancredo of Colorado.

In Texas, Benton added, legislators voted to withhold funding from the project linking Mexico to Oklahoma, known as the Trans-Texas Corridor, despite Gov. Rick Perry’s support. But with much of the $1-billion project expected to be defrayed by private developers, the effort is moving forward, said Coby Chase of the Texas Department of Transportation.

The anti-highway movement has surged from a Texas-based group, CorridorWatch.org, to old-line groups like the Birch Society and to Jerome Corsi, a conservative author who aided the Swift boat targeting of Sen. John F. Kerry during the 2004 campaign.

As alarms about NAFTA’s illusory highway have spread across the Web, the issue’s whiff of paranoia has ignited sparks of humor. Comedy Central mock commentator Stephen Colbert took up the issue earlier this year, saying the highway plan was real “because I got it from the Internet.” He added that “it’s a plan to make Canada, the U.S. and Mexico one country and force us to eat moose tacos.”

In America, you are not permitted to discuss the great migration of immigrants into this country in a reasoned rational manner. The well funded PR by corporate interests; has Americans labeled as racist, bigoted, and intolerant. The immigration of old - is held up as a banner of ‘give me your tired and huddled masses who yearn to be free’. Since few know history you can tell them anything today. Everybody can identify Ronald McDonald but only a small fraction of the population can name the Secretary of State, discuss a trade agreement with you, or give the year of the Civil War. None that I personally know can describe our monetary system or the history of the Federal Reserve. Few realize that these numerous trade agreements, written for the benefit of multinational companies (absent any loyalty), are the reason for this great worldwide dislocation. Including the victims!

It is not the immigrant (illegal or otherwise), or the American out of work, and burdened down with taxes, who is to be fully blamed. People (deliberately so) are being propagandized into taking their frustrations, anger, and fears out on one another. Daily we hear the drumbeat of violence on the border, Mexican gangs, schools overrun with illegal students, hospitals going bankrupt, and small town America being overrun with thousands of immigrants. The owners of the world want to keep the victims attacking one another. They certainly don’t want this being identified as a ‘class’ issue! The few - ruling the many for their own good pleasure and profit!

The United Nations’ Law of the Sea Treaty, a wide-ranging measure critics say will grant the U.N. control of the 70 percent of the planet under its oceans, is now headed to the full Senate for ratification.

The measure passed the Senate Foreign Relations committee today by a 17-4 vote.

“If you want a U.N. on steroids, you want the Law of the Sea Treaty,” Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., has said. “I am absolutely convinced it undermines U.S. sovereignty.”

A two-thirds vote is required for approval, meaning only 34 “no” votes can kill it.

This is not the first time LOST has come up. International negotiators drafted it in 1982 in an attempt to establish a comprehensive legal regime for international management of the seas and their resources. President Ronald Reagan, however, refused to sign LOST because he realized that the treaty doesn’t serve U.S. interests.

Bush says not to worry about losing your job.

“I know many Americans feel uneasy about new competition and worry that trade will cost jobs,” Bush said. “So the federal government is providing substantial funding for trade adjustment assistance that helps Americans make the transition from one job to the next. We are working to improve federal job-training programs. And we are providing strong support for America’s community colleges, where people of any age can go to learn new skills for a better, high-paying career.”

Since Democrats took control of Congress in January, it has not approved any free trade agreements that the administration has negotiated, and it has allowed Bush’s authority to negotiate future deals under expedited procedures to expire.

Before lawmakers now are agreements with Peru and Panama, considered likely to pass, and with Colombia and South Korea, both seen as precarious. The deal with Colombia is in trouble over human rights issues and there is strong opposition to the South Korea agreement because of barriers erected by Seoul to keep out U.S. autos and beef.

The administration already has reached agreement with Democrats to include tougher language on protecting worker rights and the environment. But critics say five consecutive years of record U.S. trade deficits have played a major role in the loss of more than 3 million manufacturing jobs since Bush took office in 2001.

President Bush is about to take his country by the hand and make a great leap forward into world government. He has signed on to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, or the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST), which transfers jurisdiction over the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Arctic oceans and all the oil and mineral resources they contain, to an International Seabed Authority. This second United Nations would be ceded eternal hegemony over two-thirds of the Earth. It is the greatest U.N. power grab in history and, thanks to George Bush, is about to succeed.

Within the Authority, consisting of 155 nations, America would have one vote and no veto. However, we would pay the principal share of the operating costs, as we do today of the United Nations.

In 1978, Ronald Reagan declared, “No national interest of the United States can justify handing sovereign control of two-thirds of the Earth’s surface over to the Third World.”

Rejecting the New International Economic Order that sought to effect a historic transfer of wealth and power from the First World to the Third, President Reagan in 1982 refused to sign the Law of the Sea Treaty or send it to the Senate. Now, Bush, Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., and Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., have resurrected this monstrosity and are about to ram it through the U.S. Senate with, if you can believe it, the support of the U.S. Navy.

The U.S. dollar might be destined to disappear, replaced by a regional currency called the amero, reports the Tokyo correspondent for the Singapore Business Times today.

“Truth is said to be stranger than fiction sometimes, and what I hear about the future of the U.S. dollar may sound like pure fiction, but the sources from whence the reports spring are, as they say, ‘usually reliable’ ones, and so they do have a ring of truth to them,” writes Anthony Rowley.

Rowley says the slide of the U.S. dollar in relation to other foreign currencies makes such a transition more likely.

“And, looking at the size of U.S. debt to all those foreign central banks and private investors who obligingly finance the American current account deficit, similar conclusions might be drawn,” he writes.

Because the U.S. is not going to stand by and watch its currency depreciate forever, he says his sources in the monetary and financial establishment plan a new currency that would take trade and investment cooperation within the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, into new areas of monetary cooperation â?? leading ultimately, perhaps, to a common currency for the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

In addition to the name “amero,” Rowley says the name “americo” is also under consideration for this new currency.

“It would be a currency more likely to be judged worth the paper it is written on than the obligations of a highly indebted U.S.,” he writes

Rowley says there is also talk of an Asian monetary union and common currency.

The commentary follows what appeared to be confirmation of the common North American currency plan by former Mexican President Vicente Fox, who told CNN’s Larry King this week [watch video] that he and President Bush had agreed on a regional currency for the Americas.

There are two common misconceptions held by those who are critical of globalism.

The first error is that there is a very small group of people who secretly run the world with all-powerful and unrestrained dictatorial powers. The second error is that there is a large amorphous and secret organization that runs the world. In both cases, the use of the word “they” becomes the culprit for all our troubles, whoever “they” might be. If taxes go up, it is “they” that did it. If the stock market goes down, “they” are to blame. Of course, nobody really knows who “they” are so a few figureheads (people or organizations) are often made out to be the scapegoats.

Depending on a person’s politics and philosophy, the scapegoats could be the U.S. President, the ACLU, the Ford Foundation, or Vladimir Putin. The point is, the real power structure is not correctely defined, and thus escapes exposure.

These misconceptions are understandable because when things are wrong, we all have a driving need to know who to blame! In some cases, elitist slight-of-hand initiates and then perpetuates false assumptions.

Former Mexican President Vicente Fox confirmed the existence of a government plan to create the amero as a new regional currency to replace the U.S. dollar, the Canadian dollar and the Mexican peso, in an interview last night on CNN’s “Larry King Live.”

It possibly was the first time a leader of Mexico, Canada or the U.S. openly confirmed a plan to create a regional currency. Fox explained the current regional trade agreement is intended to evolve into other previously hidden aspects of integration.

According to a transcript published by CNN, King, near the end of the broadcast, asked Fox a question e-mailed from a listener, a Ms. Gonzalez from Elizabeth, N.J.: “Mr. Fox, I would like to know how you feel about the possibility of having a Latin America united with one currency?”

Fox answered in the affirmative, admitting he and President Bush had agreed to pursue the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas â?? a free-trade zone extending throughout the Western Hemisphere â?? and that part of the plan was to institute a regional currency from Canada to the tip of South America.

“Long term, very long term,” he said. “What we proposed together, President Bush and myself, it’s ALCA, which is a trade union for all the Americas.”

ALCA is the acronym for the Area de Libre Comercio de las Américas, the name of the FTAA in Spanish.

King, evidently startled by Fox’s revelation of the currency, asked pointedly, “It’s going to be like the euro dollar, you mean?”

“Well, that would be long, long term,” Fox repeated.

Fox noted the FTAA plan had been thwarted by Hugo Chavez, the radical socialist president of Venezuela.

“Everything was running fluently until Hugo Chavez came,” Fox commented. “He decided to combat the idea and destroy the idea.”

Fox explained that he and Bush intended to proceed incrementally, establishing FTAA as an economic agreement first and waiting to create an amero-type currency later â?? a plan Fox also suggested was in place for NAFTA itself.

“I think the process to go, first step is trading agreement,” Fox said. “And then further on, a new vision, like we are trying to do with NAFTA.”

Resolution calls for end of NAFTA superhighway, abandonment of integration with Canada, Mexico

A House resolution urging President Bush “not to go forward with the North American Union or the NAFTA Superhighway system” is â?? according to its sponsor Rep. Virgil Goode, R-Va., in an exclusive WND interview â?? “also a message to both the executive branch and the legislative branch.”

As WND previously reported, on Jan. 22 Goode introduced H.C.R. 40, titled “Expressing the sense of Congress that the United States should not engage in the construction of a North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Superhighway System or enter into a North American Union with Mexico and Canada.”

The bill has been referred to the House Subcommittee on Highways and Transit of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

WND asked Goode if the president was risking electoral success for the Republican Party in 2008 with his insistence on pushing for North American integration via the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America, or SPP.

“Yes,” Goode answered. “You won’t hear the leadership in the Republic Party admit it, but there are many in the House and Senate who know that illegal immigration has to be stopped and legal immigration has to be reduced. We are giving away the country so a few very rich people can get richer.”

How did he react when President Bush referred to those who suggest the SPP could turn into the North American Union as “conspiracy theorists”?

“The president is really engaging in a play on words,” Goode responded. “The secretary of transportation came before our subcommittee,” he explained, “and I had the opportunity to ask her some questions about the NAFTA Superhighway. Of course, she answered, ‘There’s no NAFTA Superhighway.’ But then Mary Peters proceeded to discuss the road system that would come up from Mexico and go through the United States up into Canada.”
