House Democratic leaders are working to derail a bipartisan bill that would beef up border security, crack down on illegal aliens and employers who hire them, and reject amnesty.

Representatives Brian Bilbray (R-California) and Heath Shuler (D-North Carolina) are seeking an up-or-down vote on their bipartisan Secure America through Verification and Enforcement (SAVE) Act, which has 47 Democrat and 89 Republican co-sponsors. They need the need the signatures of 218 House members on a discharge petition for the vote to occur. The Washington Times reports that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) and other House Democratic leaders want to poison the bill by attaching an amnesty amendment to it.

Bilbray points out the amendment proposed by Representative Joe Baca (D-California) would give illegal aliens a visa for five years so that during that time period Congress could work on passing legislation that would grant citizenship, voting rights, and welfare benefits to the illegal alien population.

Waterbury - A woman who killed a man in a drunken driving crash in Waterbury has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Saraha Maldonado, 24, pleaded guilty in December to first-degree manslaughter.

Police say that on Jan. 29, 2007, Maldonado tried to speed off after the car she was driving hit a Ford Expedition at a city intersection.

A passenger in the Expedition, 46-year-old Howard Allen of Bridgeport, jumped on the hood of the car the woman was driving. Police say Allen was thrown from the hood and died a short time later.

The prosecutor says Maldonado, who entered the United States illegally, will be deported to Mexico after finishing her prison sentence.

Border Patrol agents found 62 illegal immigrants in a house in Rio Rico on Thursday, a Border Patrol spokesman said.

They went to the house after pulling over a vehicle, whose driver mentioned the house on Avenida Leon, near Rio Rico and Pendleton drives, Agent Mike Scioli said Friday. They were given consent to enter, he said.

Five in the vehicle were arrested as were all 62 in the two-bedroom home, which agents described as unsanitary and unsafe, Scioli said.
Four immigrants were held to be prosecuted for smuggling aliens, he said.

All of those arrested were from Mexico, and the 63 who do not face charges were being voluntarily sent home, he said.

Border Patrol agents also seized more than $6 million of marijuana in three busts in the past three days, the agency said in a news release.

An abandoned sport utility vehicle covered with brush and filled with more than 2,200 pounds of pot was found on the Tohono O’odham Nation on Wednesday.

Two tractor-trailers - one with 1,400 pounds and the other with 4,400 pounds of pot - were stopped at the Interstate 19 traffic checkpoint near Tubac on Thursday. The drivers were arrested.
