San Bernardino County Checking Immigration Status

Daily Bulletin

After an initial delay, San Bernardino County jails officials have begun checking the immigration status of inmates for possible deportation.

A computer glitch delayed the start of the jail checks, said Virginia Kice of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, but the situation has been remedied.

‘The computers are up, they’re working, and actually the folks with the Sheriff’s Department have been doing inmate reviews for at least a week,’ Kice said.

The employees who were to perform the jail checks finished their training in January, Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Cindy Beavers said.

‘There was a delay in them receiving the computers and equipment that was necessary in getting the program started,’ Beavers said.

The San Bernardino County grand jury criticized the program’s late start in a scathing report released last month on crowding at county jails.

Because there are so few available beds, thousands of sentenced criminals have been released early to free up space in the jail system.

The effort to remove deportable aliens from the county jails was expected to help ease that crowding, according to the report, which was released March 2.

‘However, a delay by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in providing the necessary computer networking to interface with the sheriff’s computer system has placed this project on hold,’ the report states.

A year ago, Sheriff Gary Penrod first suggested the program, and the Board of Supervisors approved the plan in August.

The more than 7,000 illegal immigrants booked into county jail each year cost more than $11 million annually to incarcerate. Removing them could save money, Penrod said.

Additionally, having a more accurate count of how many illegal immigrants had been detained and held by the county would make it easier to obtain reimbursements from the federal government for those costs, 2nd District Supervisor Paul Biane said.

Once arrested, make them pick fruit for their bunk, weight room, telemundo TV, rap music and three squares a day. Have them pick up public trash and remove graffitti. Have them pave new roads. Make them build a new wall. That way we won’t have to pay illegals to do it. Send a couple of heads of lettuce to McCain too. No charge. Courtesy of the prisoners.

DEPORT THEM ALL AND CHARGE THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT FOR DEPORTING SERVICES!!!

  3. Harry L. Hughes Says:

They should utilize chain gangs like sheriff Joe Arpio does in Maricopa County, AZ. Make them work off their lodging and meals.

  4. Sherri Says:

I’m all for using prison labor to work agricultural jobs as well as pick up trash, and clear brush from fields. The money earned should go to the cost of their incarceration. Any illegal aliens should be deported immediately upon release—as in transport waiting outside the jail to take them away for deportation.

It’s about time…I believe your average American had already figured this out years ago.

This may be a small step in a fight against illigal immigrations, but it is a great program in a right direction . This one saves 11 millions dollars ANUALLY, and that’s just one county. If only it could be implemented nationwide, America would be a great shape in terms of crime reduction and tax dollars savings.

Another smoke screen.I’ll believe it when I see it.I want to see the article that reads “ILLEGALS DEPORTED”. All we hear is how the politians are going to do this and going to do that. They have been working on the problem for 30 years and in the meantime we’ve lost our country.Wake up America. If you want to see what America will look like in the near furture,go to the poor cities of Mexico.Better yet, visit south Ontario where the Daily Bulletin is located.Visit the areas surrounding L.A.,San Diego,Phoenix or just about any other city in a state that borders Mexico.Just be sure to take a gun and an interpreter. Also, check out the advertising billboards that are all printed in spanish. What happened to English? What happened to our Country? This is AMERICA ! !

I have yet to hear one illegal alien amnesty advocate say a word about how much money amnesty will cost american tax payers. Their side is simply telling a bunch of lies and leaving things out. Give them amnesty and guess what their next step will be….take over america and have a spanish national anthem. The amnesty side never mentions that illegals already get something americans can’t…free healthcare. Their children also get free education. Don’t vote for any of your representatives who supports amnesty for 36 million more illegals. (including their families in mexico)
