Growing Unease for Some Blacks on Immigration

NY Times

Some blacks bristle at the comparison between the civil rights movement and the immigrant demonstrations, pointing out that black protesters in the 1960’s were American citizens and had endured centuries of enslavement, rapes, lynchings and discrimination before they started marching.

Others worry about the plight of low-skilled black workers, who sometimes compete with immigrants for entry-level jobs.

And some fear the unfinished business of the civil rights movement will fall to the wayside as America turns its attention to a newly energized Hispanic minority with growing political and economic clout.

‘All of this has made me start thinking, ‘What’s going to happen to African-Americans?’ ‘ said Brendon L. Laster, 32, a black fund-raiser at Howard University here, who has been watching the marches. ‘What’s going to happen to our unfinished agenda?’

  1. Sherri Says:

To compare the recent illegal alien protests to the Civil Rights movement of the Sixties is disgusting. The people that marched and protested back then were AMERICAN CITIZENS whose rights were being violated. These people are ILLEGAL ALIENS WHO HAVE NO RIGHTS IN THIS COUNTRY! They are DEMANDING rights they are not entitled to! There is a big difference between the two.

How blinded can you be sherri?
The same system that once ordered your grandparents to the back of the
bus,and didnt allow them in white schools, and white bathrooms,Is the same
system that is implying that “Illegal Aliens” Shouldnt have rights in this country.
Let me tell you something, this country was founded on immigration there is no such thing as a pure american breed. When is everyone gonna get that through their heads! Some where down the line your blood runs from who knows how many cultures.
I do agree with creating a program for amnesty.
And I believe that it is unfair that Latinos are the ones getting the worst
end of it in the media, Dont forget that you Asians,Europeans,Africans, etc
are in this too , But the spotlight is on Latinos (of course)
Listen Sherri dont let the white racist views brainwash you, Im starting to
notice that some black people are buying into the hype.
Dont forget just a few years back , black and latinos were for the same cause
and struggle, But recently it seems like some folks are forgetting about that
    and that is not cool.
Ill end this with this , “My people are very proud and hard working people , we are loyal and brave to our causes and beliefs, we will go out of our way to help, But on the same token dont get it twisted, We are not ones to F&@! with and wont put up with been disrespected that I can assure you.

  3. Brad Says:

Illegal aliens have the right to return to their home country and enter our country thru the front door. To equate sneaking across the border willingly to being captured, bound in chains, transported in the hold of a ship, sold, beaten, lynched and worse is unconscionable. As for Latinos getting the worst of the media, I didn’t see masses of Asians, Middle Easterners, Europeans or Africans marching thru our streets carring foreign flags. I didn’t here any of the speakers at these rallies talking in Swedish, Swahili, or Korean. The simple fact is that most illegals come to this country from Mexico, South and Central America. Latinos are getting the rotten publicity they deserve. As to we are a country of immigrants is incorrect. Historically we were a country of immigrants, but currently we are a country of natives. Most Americans are native born, not immigrants.
Your comment, or threat “My people are very proud and hard working people , we are loyal and brave to our causes and beliefs, we will go out of our way to help, But on the same token dont get it twisted, We are not ones to F&@! with and wont put up with been disrespected that I can assure you.” shows the true nature of the rallies we just witnessed. If you really think you could win a civil war against the other 200 plus million Americans in this country who don’t agree with you, you need to have your head examined.

Black Mexicans are treated like shit in Mexico.

  5. Eddie B. Says:

    Dear Gabriel -

This is about preserving our country, our values, our freedoms and our laws. Illegal immigration is an UNARMED INVSION of our country. We do not have the infrstructure to support 20,000,000 invaders who can’t read or speak English, have not been had health screenings to ensure the rest of the country that massive infections will not spread such as HIV/AIDS and the untreatable TB that is turning up. This is also about controlling urban sprawl and protecting our housing laws. It is about controlling crime and preventing gangs like MS-13 from terrorizing honest, hard working citizens.

This is about protecting middle class America and the black population is going to be hard hit by an under class of society that will work for below minimum wages fueled by corporate greed for bigger profit margins. These people will live 15 to 20 people in a house or garage to survive then send cash money to Mexico to bring more illegal invaders here to earn modern day slave wages, have babies, and the chain goes on forever.

This isn’t about white racists wanting to discriminate against bronze people. This is about us wanting to preserve the quality of our lives, the quality of life for our children and keeping America strong. Today, America is weak. We are being invaded. Our job today is to break the chain.

  7. marleen Says:

Gabriel ..stop referring to whites as racists it was whites under the JIM CROW LAWS that marched for the civil rights of our black american neighbors. we went through hard times on both sides with the race riots and peace marches.. we cried and many of us died as a result of jim crow laws written by Elite politicians..go back to your history books and you will read about how throughout history there were many attrocities against race and religion…or if you will not be bothered picking up a history book read the news of these present times.. PUNK!

I’m charged up w/u.s. patriotism after reading these comments(i’m a 32yr. old blk.male). there’s been alliances formed in USA since all of this has started. along w/hispanics: asians, arabs, africans, gays, traitors etc. have marched. i didn’t see any foreigners busting in during the civil-war or world war 2!! —-but look at all the “Strays” now! I feel that all the Legal-foreigners & Traitors taking the hispanics side ‘proves’ they’re “Anti-American”. look, no one told “Any” foreign charity-case to bust our borders & work under the table for low-wages! sounds like a personal choice to me. & nobody forced them to bring/have foreign-kids here placing them in a volatile situation. look fellow-americans, all these foreigners: hispanic, asian, african, india, mid-eastern[& traitors]”Can’t” sympathize w/our problems because they’re”Causing” them. So i just say let’s(300 million)just take swift, overwhelming socio-political action.(since d.c. is anti-american) i just bought my new: “New-England Patriots” sports-cap yesterday($25) & i had foreigners & traitor-americans looking speechless & powerless against it. —get yours today!!!!!!

  9. John Creasy Says:

I’m African American and my fellow African Americans better understand and quickly that, mexicans/hispanics are even more anti-Black than whites! If they come to power in this country they will do all they can to marginalize Blacks here as they have done in their home countries. The current African Leadership is not only aiding and abetting the undermining this great nation by supporting this invasion of illegal mexican/hispanic criminals, but African Americans as well. The A.A. leadership’s behavior is becoming traitorous. The African American community better wake up fast and become—African American Minutemen!

  10. peter Says:

gabriel I,m a cherokee! it look like to me your movement is about greed power and land grabing its not about being a american

  11. Carlos Calderon Says:

Several points: First to Sherri who says that immigrants have no rights; she needs to read the 14th Ammendment of the United States Constitution: which guarantees equal protection to “any person within its jurisdiction”

Second to point out African Americans as being more affected in the job market by illegal immigrants is racist on its face! Illegal immigrants are competeing against the lowest skilled workers and there are many more low skilled whites than blacks! How dare someone just insinuate that African Americans can only have low skilled jobs!

Third, to the person who says that Mexicans are more anti-black than whites they need only look to the cause of the Mexican War which was over Texas and Mexico’s refusal to allow slavery in that state.

Fourth, to the person who says whites were marching for black civil rights: the whites were putting the dogs on the blacks and flipping them over with water from fire hydrants! It was the Jews who were helping the blacks in the south!

    Anyway, ya’ll keep it straight!

  12. Educated American Says:

Mr. Basic and John Creasy: Men, welcome aboard! From the moment that I saw videos of Ted Hayes (I think I called him “Tim” in another thread) and some black Minutemen, I knew something great was happening. Americans of African descent have built, worked, fought, and died for this country. Most of this occuring prior to the civil rights gains of the 1950’s, 60’s and early 70’s!! I have always drawn inspiration and strength from the journey that black Americans have taken over the last roughly 400 years. Black Americans ARE AMERICA. (Sorry Mr. Basic, but I’m an Arizona Cardinals fan - don’t laugh! . . . long story)
