1 in 5 babies born to illegals in CA

The Center for Immigration Studies report said 22.1 percent of California births were to mothers that lacked legal residency - far higher than any other state. The rate in Riverside County was 21.1 percent, Tulare County was 26.3 percent, and 34.8 percent in Monterey County. Jeffrey Passel, a demographer at the Pew Hispanic Center, said the study’s finding didn’t surprise him. Undocumented workers tend to be younger and their families have a higher percentage of kids than the national average, although these numbers remain estimates, he said.

These are the top 10 states for births to undocumented mothers:

1. California — 22.1 percent
2. Arizona — 17.2 percent
3. Texas — 16.6 percent
4. Nevada — 16.4 percent
5. Colorado — 11.9 percent
6. Illinois — 11.2 percent
7. New York — 10.2 percent
8. New Jersey — 10.1 percent
9. Oregon — 9. percent
10. New Mexico — 9.7 percent
