San Diego: Crashes Involving Human Smugglers

Feb. 10, 2005: Vehicle carrying 28 tried to elude Border Patrol. Twenty-one illegal immigrants were injured when one of three vans being chased by the U.S. Border Patrol overturned on state Route 905, plummeting down a 30-foot embankment and scattering passengers over a wide area.

Aug. 15, 2005: A large sedan carrying 15 illegal immigrants rolled over and crashed into a stand of trees in rural East County. The accident occurred at state Route 94 and Lyons Valley Road, just south of Jamul. Five people were injured.

June 30, 2005: A Chrysler minivan carrying 11 illegal immigrants driving on the wrong side of the road slammed head-on into a pickup on state Route 94 west of Jamul. Five people died.

March 31, 2004: A minivan carrying 13 illegal immigrants flipped over on Interstate 8 near Blossom Valley, seriously injuring at least two people.

Aug. 31, 2003: Nineteen illegal immigrants were injured when their speeding van crashed in rural East County after being followed by the California Highway Patrol. The Chevrolet Astro van flipped at least twice on I-8, just west of state Route 79 near Alpine.

March 17, 2003: A car with at least seven illegal immigrants overturned on I-8 in Descanso, killing one person and seriously injuring another.

March 9, 2003: Two men were killed and 20 people injured after a stolen Chevrolet pickup crashed on I-8 near Lakeside while trying to avoid a spike strip put down by the Border Patrol.

Jan. 9, 2003: Two women were killed and at least 15 illegal immigrants injured, many of them critically, when a pickup crashed into a bridge support on I-8 at Route 79 during a Border Patrol chase.

June 24, 2002: Six people were killed when a van carrying 33 illegal immigrants plowed head-on into a Ford Explorer and a Toyota van. The driver was going the wrong way on I-8 east of the Sunrise Highway exit with the van’s lights out, trying to avoid a Border Patrol checkpoint.
