SOS Founder Submits Ballot Initiative

Daily Bulletin

San Bernadino — The founder of a statewide anti-illegal-immigration group on Monday submitted signatures for a city ballot measure that would bar tax-funded day-labor centers and other services to illegal immigrants.

San Bernardino resident Joseph Turner, who founded Save Our State in 2004, said he turned in about 3,150 signatures to the City Clerk’s Office in hopes of qualifying the measure for the ballot.

Turner’s group needs 2,216 valid signatures from registered voters in San Bernardino. He said the measure might appear on the November ballot or be voted on in a special election.

‘Local politicians state over and over that there’s nothing they can do about illegal immigration,’ said Turner, the author of the initiative. ‘They say it’s a state and federal issue, so they’ll just ignore it. What I’m saying is there are things you can do at the local level to mitigate the harmful effects of illegal immigration.’

The measure would:

* Ban the city from using tax dollars to set up day-labor centers for illegal immigrants. There are now no city-sponsored centers in San Bernardino, although other cities such as Rancho Cucamonga and Rialto have them.
* Impose fines of at least $1,000 for anyone operating a day-labor center without proper licensing.
* Require the city to deny business permits to companies found to employ illegal immigrants.
* Impose $1,000 fines on landlords who rent to illegal immigrants.
* Require all city business be done in English, except when federal, state or county law mandates otherwise.

‘This initiative targets all the policies and procedures that aid and abet illegal immigration,’ said Turner, who formed a committee to push the initiative.

Hats off to Joseph Turner and Save Our State. Great job Joe! No more tax dollars for these day-labor centers unless Bush wants to use them as collcetion centers to “find” all the ILLEGAL workers for deportation. Really wouldn’t be as hard as Bush says it would be to find them.
